BEAUTIFUL BASKET-WEAVE CLUTCH PURSE FROM THE PHILIPPINES, 1960s: $15.00
This lovely woven basket purse was collected in the 1960s in the Philippines. It shows the typical patterns of basket weaving, using blackened and natural bamboo strips; but this one features red accents. It is a very practical purse. My late wife loved these native Filipino purses and collected a number of them. She had this one in reserve but she never got around to using it; so it is brand new, just as it came in about 1968, when we lived in Cotabato. It is about 11 1/2 inches by 4 1/2 inches when closed, and is almost flat (about 3/4 inch) until opened. I am not sure of its origin; it may be Tiruray. (She collected a lot of Tiruray baskets.) The weaving is the same type as Tiruray, of narrow bamboo strips, but this purse is flexible, unlike other Tiruray purses with which I am familiar; and it incorporates some red in the design--which is very attractive but unusual.
