The Chindits were a long range penetration group organized by the eccentric British General Orde Wingate. They were the largest special operations unit of WW2, deploying behind Japanese lines, and supplied by air. Equipment for the Chindits was acquired as much as possible from \"in theater\" sources to avoid shipping necessary gear halfway around the world. They wore jungle hats from Australia, and used rifles and bayonets from India. This British WW2 CHINDIT MK. III SMLE ENFIELD BAYONET is in excellent condition, with some scattered scratching and spot darkening to the blade, two small chips in the lower left handle scale, a fairly deep \"ridge\" indent to the right handle scale, and with some light overall age wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the bayonet is in excellent shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it features an 11 7/8\" long blade, boasts tough hardwood handle scales with white painted bands for ease of recognition, and is marked at the ricasso with its maker, \"R.F.I\" (Rifle Factory Ishapore), along with \"MK 3\". It\'s stamped \"DP 62\" at the reverse ricasso, again marked \"DP\" at the right side of the guard, and is a fine example of a rare, original British WW2 CHINDIT MK. III SMLE ENFIELD BAYONET.
