Based on a photographiccomparison of a nearly identical desk, this beautiful antique, cylinder topwalnut desk is thought to be manufactured by the John Souther furniture companyin Boston during the late 1800s.However, no specific manufacturer identification has been found on thedesk. While the desk is in excellentcondition, there are condition items to be noted: 1) a small blemish on the front edge of thedesk, 2) missing partitions in the single pedestal, (3) some warping in one ofthe walnut burl panels of the cylinder top, (4) the leather ink blotter has been replacedand (5) the corner joints on the decorative top piece have been repaired atsome point. All five blemishes arepictured.
The Roman numerals, XVIII,are carved (see picture) on the inside of both the cylinder top and the frameholding it. The top, as well as thedesktop drawer and letter-box unit can be removed. The smaller, decorative panels on the top surfaceof the cylinder unit can be removed as well. The drawers are fully functional and the blotter slides out to provideextra work surface. There is no key forthe lock securing the cylinder top.
Myhusband inherited this unique piece in 1963 and it has been prominentlydisplayed in our home since our marriage in 1966. Downsizing requires that we find someone whowill cherish this beautiful desk as much as we have for many years.
