DRAGON IN DREAMS HISTORICAL INFORMATION:During the War on the Western and Eastern Fronts waged between 1939-1945 across the vast expanses of the French countryside, Russia and the German Heartland the frontline moved almost constantly. From one week to the next, the battle see-sawed between the steppes of Russia and into Stalingrad, to Rommel\'s well defended Atlantic Wall to the Front lines stretching across France and into Belgium... and finally into the homeland of the Reich... Germany itself. This often meant that positions moved constantly and were desperately in need of weapons that could be moved or relocated easily on the battlefield. For the Germans, this role often fell to the \"Nebelwerfer\" Rocket Launcher, which can be towed by various vehicles or could also be maneuvered into position. The \"Nebelwerfer\" was called the \"Screaming Mimi\" by Allied troopsdue to the sound the rockets made as they were launched and traveled through the air to their target. The 15cm \"Nebelwerfer\" was truly a fearful weapon, it was referred to by the Allied troops as \"Screaming Mimi\" due to the sound the rockets made once they were launched and they approached their target. The \"Nebelwerfer\" designed in 1940 and delivered to the front lines shortly after the invasion of France, proved to be an effective anti-personnel weapon against Allied troops in all phases of WWII.The Soldaten who is standing guard over this weapon may actually be part of the crew or he may be waiting for the weapon to be towed to the front lines... in any event his guard duty will probably not last long.
HISTORICAL QUOTE:\"In war there is no second prize for the runner-up.\"General Omar N. Bradley
HISTORICAL NOTE: The15cmNebelwerfer 41 (15cm NbW 41)wasa German Multiple Rocket used in the Second World War. It served with units oftheNebeltruppen, hadresponsibility during combat to deliver high explosives during World War II. Thename Nebelwerferis best translatedas \"smoke thrower\" since the early development of the weapon was to launch smoke or poison gas.

Allied troops nicknamed the weapon“Screaming Mimi” due to itsdistinctive sound.

Rocket development had begun during the 1920sand reached fruition in the late-1930s. The first weapon to be delivered to thetroops was the 15cm Nebelwerfer 41. In 1940, after the Battle of France, thispurpose-designed rocket was capable of delivering gas, smoke and high explosivewarheads to a distance of approximately 2,200 meters. It, like virtually allGerman rocket designs, was spin-stabilized to increase accuracy. One veryunusual feature was that the rocket motor was in the front, the exhaust venturibeing about two-thirds down the body from the nose, with the intent to optimizethe blast and fragmentation effect of the rocket as the warhead would still beabove the ground when it detonated. This proved to greatly complicatemanufacture for not much extra effect and it was not copied on later rocketdesigns. The rockets were fired from a six-tube launcher mounted on a towedcarriage adapted from that used by the PaK 36 3.7cm Anti-tank gun. Between1941-1945, approximately 5.5 million 15cm rockets and six thousand launcherswere manufactured during World War II.

Note: Though we have never visited Germany or any of the battle sites of this vital phase of WWII, we have visited the Normandy and Bastogne areas, including all Five of the Normandy Beaches, the Baugnez \'44 Museum - site of the Malmedy Massacre, and the pastoral surrounding area in Belgium on several occasions. We have found both the French and Belgian people, especially in the towns in and around Normandy and also in Bastogne, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation… despite the huge loss of life to the French and Belgian civilians and in damaged buildings. In addition, should you ever want to visit the area in and around Normandy or Bastogne,we would be willing to share our experiences or trip itinerary with you, which mayhelp to make your travel through the area easier and perhaps make the historical experience more valuable.
