Here we have a 12\" wide x 9-1/2\" tall (not including the decorative acorn) bronze or brass ships bell engraved on the front \"Glendovey/1876/Aberystwith\". Bell weighs 21 lbs and is in poor condition with a \"Y\"-shaped crack on the front of the bell emanative from an impact mark on the front lower edge of the bell. Otherwise the bell is in good condition and the crack could be repaired. Clanger is intact and the decorative acorn nut on top unscrews. There is also a yoke for the bell with a handled welded to it for swinging the bell...I suspect parts of this are original to the bell but the handle is likely not.
This bell came out of a train station in Uruguay several years ago. Sadly the person shipping the bell to me did not take much care in packing and the crack occurred during transport from Uruguay to the United States.
Nonetheless, the ship was built by James Liang in Deptford, Sunderland, as hull 375 in 1876. She was a 3-masted iron barque built for William James of Aberystwith, Wales. In 1917 the vessel was sold to H.E. Wolden of Uruguay and later sand in Montevideo, Uruguay where she was broken up in 1935 (though some of her seems to have been left in place until possibly as late as 1943). The bell made it to some train station and saw use for many more years.
Really a great bell...hard to find these early bells any more. Shipping costs do not include the yoke, which is of significant size and would need to be shipped separately. Please message me if you are interested in the yoke as well and I will get you a shipping quote for it.
