The precious metal contained is abundant. Since gold is much heavier than quartz, at 21.3 grains (troy), I would guesstimate this specimen to be around 50% by weight in gold. White matrix (quartz) is attached to the gold. An unidentified dark, gun-metal grey mineral is associated. This lacy golden morsel hails from the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. Unless my beans had run out, I would not have sold this for $100 back when gold was worth a fraction of what it is today. In November of 1993, gold spot was $361 per ounce. Nor do you find any salted pay-dirt here. That\'s not genuine. Real pay-dirt was created by nature, not by a man\'s hand dropping gold into a bucket or zip-lock bag full of sand or dirt. I was a professional placer miner priding myself on being able to locate pay-streaks, both virgin pay-packs and redeposits. If I still had mining claims, any pay-dirt offered here would be direct from the ground and the original deposit from whence it was taken. It might be unconsolidated alluvium or, it could still be hard pack. With most virgin deposits, the gold-bearing dirt will be highly compacted and/or cemented. If my claim contained these clays and/or caliches, I would make every effort to deliver this material just as it was found, unsalted, consolidated, and \'virgin\'. The problem to maintaining pristine pay-dirt condition is that removing \'pay\' from where it\'s lain buried for thousands or millions of years requires excavation. The process of digging this high-grade dirt up generally will cause sediments to break apart. But I don\'t sell pay-dirt and now you know part of the reason why. I\'ve personallybought rocks thathad gold painted on them. As a lad, my dreams stirred and mystified me with the recurring labor of digging for gold in my neighbor\'s back yard. That has always struck me as odd since my roots are in southern Illinois, where coal, not gold, was king. What could have been the stimulus for such visions? I like to believe distant ancestors were involved, but it seems unlikely I\'m destined ever to find out. In any case, the seed was planted. After four years in the military, something called me to move out west. Could that \'something\' have been the Call of the Wild or the ancient lure of gold? Once relocating to Arizona, there was nothing else to do but become a prospector. I got to know the lay of the land, learned to go where the gold was, and followed the trail of the argonauts for 20 years.
As a lone wolf, small-scale placer miner, I relied upon rocker boxes, bucket brigades, sluices, gold pans, dry-washers, shovels, pickaxes, suction dredges, metal detectors, and my old work-horse, a \'76 Ford Econoline van. If you\'ve a strong work ethic and aren\'t a \'loaf about the fort\', mining might suit you nicely. It\'s mostly brute hard work. I can respect big equipment operators for their prowess at moving earth as well as the small-scale, artisanal, tunnel-rat miner burrowing beneath 100 feet of alluvial overburden. There are countless diverse types of placer deposits requiring different methodologies to recover the gold. From someone who knows, there\'s no such thing as \'an easy ounce\'. Relatively speaking, I have found \'easy ounces\', but added to the countless weeks or months of finding little or nothing...well...you get the picture.
