STUNNING ART-DECO GOLDSCHEIDER CERAMIC FIGURE “CARMEN” BY JOSEF LORENZL
VIENNA, AUSTRIA EARLY 20TH CENTURY

Up for offer is this beautiful and highly collectable art-pottery figure of a Spanish lady. A delightful Art-Deco style ceramic figure potted in Vienna, Austria by the renowned Goldscheider manufacture at the beginning of the 20th Century. A ceramic figure personifying “Carmen”, the Prosper MERIMEE ( 1803 – 1870 ) heroine forever immortalized by George BIZET ( 1838 – 1875 ) in his famous opera of same name; produced by the Goldscheider-Wien firm and designed by the great Josef LORENZL ( 1892 – 1950 ), circa 1923. The ceramic-ware figure is artistically modelled with great attention and the off-white body is hand decorated with luminous and vibrant polychrome enamels. She on a light off-white veil or “mantilla” is wearing a magnificent floral ochre-yellow patterned crinoline-dress and is holding a fan on her right hand, superbly decorated with vivid multicolour flower-heads and she puts her left hand on her hip. On high heels and poised on tiptoes she stands against a pot full of blooming flowers on a circular black base. A very stylish and appealing Art-Deco Austrian figure. A huge piece measuring approx. 20 in. ( 50.5 cm. ) in height. A fabulous and elegant piece in very good antique condition: a very minor hairline on the back of the base has been professionally restored, no chips, no crackling, no crazing. Bearing indistinctly impressed to the back of the base the artist name LORENZL and the model numbers 5088 / 113 / 11. The underside with the factory mark GOLDSCHEIDER / WIEN / MADE IN AUSTRIA stamped in black ink plus XXIII. / D 1. / F. A fantastic Viennese Art-Deco piece, plenty of charm and grace. An original GOLDSCHEIDER-WIEN ceramic-ware figure, in fabulous condition and from the period. A beautiful and appealing piece manufactured in Vienna, Austria at the beginning of the Art-Deco era, early 20th Century, circa 1923.
