Great old quack HAIR TONIC antique bottle, DEEP purple AUXILIATOR for the HAIR:
$49.99

6 1/2\" tall fancy rectangular-shaped deep PURPLE AMETHYST color antique AUXILIATOR for the HAIR quackbottle. This is a very early hand Blown Into Mold bottle (BIM) with a tooled top, dating it all the way back to the 1800\'s.

  • Bottle embossed: \"PAUL WESTPHAL / AUXILIATOR / FOR / THE HAIR / NEW YORK\".

  • Condition: This bottle is in GOOD SOLID condition. It has some cloudy stain, some ground patina and wear, just enough to give it that old rustic look. It actually looks just like what a CENTURY OLD + bottle should look like, a little weathered though NOTHING SIGNIFICANTLY wrong with it. NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc. (See photos for overall condition).

  • Age: An early hand-blown bottle (Blown-In-Mold = BIM) with a tooled-top, ca. late 1800\'s.

  • Shipping: All DOMESTIC shipping charges INCLUDE insurance. We have enjoyed shipping our items all over the world and are happy to offer most of our items to international buyers. Yet insuring International parcels is very expensive so PLEASE NOTE; we do NOT insure International orders unless winning buyer specifically requests this and we are able to provide an insurance quote. We do not falsify information on the Customs Form, such as a price other than what the actual purchase price is, so please do not request us to do so. We ship several times a week and send payment acknowledgments and shipping confirmations. Your prompt payment will assure a very quick turn-around time. IMPORTANT NOTE: If our shipping charge is much more than the actual shipping cost, we will refund the excess so what YOU pay for shipping/insurance is very close to, if not exactly, the ACTUAL shipping costs! This is especially important for foreign buyers to know as most of our foreign shipping charges are rough estimates.

A great antique quack Hair Tonic bottle from the 1800\'s. Excellent with the \'Auxiliator\' embossing. This is from an era when even hair tonic bottles were advertised with fraudulent quack claims such as \'CURES BALDNESS\', \'DANDRUFF CURE\', \'HAIR GROWER\', so the Auxiliator claim fit right into this competitive market. What makes this example exceptional is the deep purple color. This is a naturally occurring process with antique clear glass. We\'ve all heard about old glass turning purple in the sunlight? ... This beautiful purple amethyst color is the result of this bottle being blown with manganese-glass. Manganese is a mineral, a rock, that was mined, crushed, and pulverized into a powder, then added to vats of molten liquid glass, and acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the natural aqua-tinted glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass. But when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, it triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. Though some may suggest that this lavender color has been artificially produced or altered if it was purpled by any other source than natural sunlight, the only thing that may be altered is the time it took to turn purple. It really doesn\'t matter whether a bottle has turned purple by the sun or UV rays in a controlled environment, they all turn the same purple color as it is all the same chemical reaction taking place. But what IS important is the age of the bottle, as with few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 has manganese in it and will turn sun-colored-amethyst. Not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make this a great looking antique bottle, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique! This bottle fits well into a line up of other fancy shaped and colorful quack hair tonic bottles. It\'s not just the purple color that gives this bottle merit but also the fancy shape, large size, and quack \'auxiliator\' embossing claim, check it out!
