Hammer Dulcimer or Harp - Cheese Slicer!
What an amazing combination: A handy kitchen gadget and musical instrument all in one!
In the category of conversation pieces, you will never find another like this!
If you are looking for the ideal gift for the musical enthusiast in your life, you have found a treasure!
I have this slicer because it came to me in an estate. Actually, I did not know what it was and lured my Facebook friends into a guessing game. Several of them made jokes about it being a musical instrument, while others referred me to sites around the web describing it as a slicer.
When I decided to sell it, I couldn\'t resist their comments and came up with this little ditty and created a music video!
Check it out:
Here are all the of the \"kitchen gadget\" details:
- I have not used this slicer (except for making a music video ;-) It was obtained as part of an estate. I thought I might use it, but I have just never had occasion. We are terribly dependent on fast food around here!
- It looks to be made of aluminum
- The bolts on the side adjust the tightness of the wires
- It is in great shape and I tried to get picture of the worst spots
- There is no brand name anywhere to be found - sorry!
Here are all the \"musical instrument\" details:
- It will not stay in tune if you move it very much. I arranged a very nice lullaby sounding tune, and had it almost ready to record. But, my one G wire was going flat, so I tried to adjust it a little. As soon as I laid the piece on its side and adjusted the screw with a screwdriver, EVERYthing changed! Egads! Had to start all over again!
- The strings are not in any order. At any given time, you might have 3 \"A\" strings, 4 \"D\" strings, only one F and no Bflat at all. But, as I already noted, if you want different notes, just move it around a little or make some adjustments with a screwdriver, and voila! You have a new set of notes!
- In order to play, I had to take out a keyboard and mark the particular notes on tape and make my arrangements accordingly. With this in mind, you could keep yourself entertained for years, just by tightening the whole unit (or giving it a good thump, toss in the air, or temp change) every once in a while.
- I think the reason this particular slicer works as a musical instrument and others might not is that there must be a slight bend (not noticeable to the eye) in one of the anchor bars. I noticed that the strings on the ends were tighter and at least a couple octaves higher than those in the middle. A slicer that was perfect would probably produce wires with almost all the same tension - thus, the same notes.
- This could be a really fun little toy!
Well, I think that is about it!
