JAPANESE HANGING SCROLL: Antique \"Clouded Mt Fuji\",

by Tsunenobu Yobuko, c. 680, Edo Period

This is a beautiful and venerableHanging Scroll with a painting on paper by the artist, Kano Tsunenobu, who was active in the late 1600\'s, the early Edo Period. He most likely made this painting around 1680. The elegant mounting is new.

Kano Tsunenobu was born in Kyoto in 1636, the eldest son of Kano Naonobu and the nephew of Kano Tan\'yu. After his father\'s death in 1650, he became head of the Kobikicho line of the Kano schooland succeeded to the Kano estate at Kobikicho. He shaved his head the same year and called himself \"Yoboku\" Like his father and uncle before him, hewas appointed the official court painter at the Sento Palace.

In 1704 he wasgiven rank ofhogen(Eye of the Law) and later in 1709 he received the most coveted title ofhoin,(Sign of the Law).In thesame year,at order of the emperor, hepainted the Kensho Shoji (portraits of Confucius, Mencius, and other sages) in the Shishinden of the Imperial Palace.

Tsunenobu wasleading artist of the Kano school and brought the Kobikicho branch to a position of prominence His paintings are eminently pleasant, charming and delicate in tone.

He died in Edo (Tokyo) in 1713, and was buried at Honmonji, a temple in the Ikegami area of Edo.

Tsunenobu\'s work is in many collections around the wold including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the British Museum and the Sackler Museum at Harvard, to name a few.

In the present painting, Tsunenobu has given us a deceptively simple view of Mt Fuji shrouded in mists and clouds, and seen across one of the five lakes which surround it in the best of Kano-ha tradition.

The Kano school is one of the most famous schools of Japanese painting. It was founded by Kano Masanobu (1434-1530), a contemporary of Sesshu and student of Shubun.

Kano painters often composed very flat pictures, but they balanced impeccably detailed realistic depictions of animals and other subjects in the foreground with abstract, often entirely blank, clouds and other background elements. The use of negative space to indicate distance, and to imply mist, clouds, sky or sea is drawn from traditional Chinese modes and is used beautifully by the Kano artists.

This is precisely what we have in the this painting: the Sacred peak barely suggested and the bottom half left essential empty to imply the mists which obscure most of the iconic volcano.

It is the perfect kind of painting which reflects Wabi-Sabi, acomprehensive Japanese aestheticcentered on the acceptance of transienceand imperfection. This aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is \"imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete\"

Mt Fuji is certainly there, but we can not see it completely, the mists will continue to swirl around the base the peak and the sun will rise completely and change the light: imperfect, impermanent and incomplete.

This is a painting for meditation.

This scroll is not a large one, measuring 48 inches long and 22 /2 inches wide, not including the roller ends which are of wood. For its some 364 or so years of life, the painting is in good condition. There are some small wrinkles in the lower part and a couple of very small scuffs.

The new mounting is very elegant and attests to the importance of preserving this painting.

The top and bottom portions are made of a rich brocade with a green bronze ground and a multiplicity of decorative peasant figures in self colored threads. The part surrounding the painting has a grey/blue ground with large floral motifs in dull metallic gold And the two borders at the top and bottom of the painting are of a brocade with a warm brown ground and a foliage motif in bright metallic gold. The futai are faced with the same material and backed by the green bronze silk.

The richness of his new mounting bears witness to the value of this painting and serves as a perfect setting for it.

The photos give a very good idea of the beauty and excellence of this scroll with its painting on paper by Kano Tsunenobu from the early Edo Period, or around 1680.

The painting on this scroll is around 333 or so years old and has passed through many difficult times including two World Wars, the Second of which was disastrous for its native country. For an unframed work on such a delicate support as paper, it is remarkable that it has survived at all, let alone in such good condition. But this scroll and similar works of art are not in absolutely perfect condition and they frequently show evidence of their long life. I endeavor to point out if and where there may be any damage, but the photographs tell the whole story. Please examine them carefully. If you are looking for something with absolutely no signs of age, I am afraid you will have to look elsewhere. In short, these beautiful scrolls were not born yesterday.

I indicate the artist\'s name based on a signature and seal and also the style, but occasionally a scroll may be a copy of a work by a famous painter. In the present case, I am sure that the painting is by Kano Tsunenobu.

Due to limitations of photography and the inevitable differences in monitor settings, the color of the pictures on your monitor may be slightly different from the scroll itself, but I did my best to capture it as it is. And, at least on my monitor, the color is good match.
