Kneisner & Doering KWZ-30 DSP Premium DXing & SWLing Receiver ***VERY SCARCE***:
$1799.95

This sale is fortheGerman madeKneisner & Doering KWZ-30 receiver with DSP integratedwithin it\'s circuitry. In all the years that we have been sellingreceivers on , we have only offered two other KWZ-30\'s for sale. Andwhile most receivers are manufactured in the thousands or even the tens ofthousands, this unit numbers very small in production run. Introductionto the market was in 1997 and it was manufactured until 2003. We do not know the precise quantity that wereproduced, but suspect that it was under 500 based on it\'s availability and wewould not be surprised if the number manufactured would be half that number. Not only are they scarce, but the owners donot like to surrender them.

The selling price on the KWZ-30is set in accordance with desirability, performance, rarity, andcondition.

The KWZ-30 is used and has somesigns of prior ownership with a variety of small marks or scratches on thepainted finish of the cover. Pleaselook closely at the pictures for specific cosmetic detail. As foroperation, the receiver works beautifully with great sensitivity andexceptional reception.

Included in this sale are theKWZ-30 receiver, a copy of the English user manual, extensive Radio Netherlandtest report, copies of reviews found in WRTH and Passport to World Band Radio, and a regulated DC power supply. There is a good reason for includingthispower supply that we will discuss a bit in the description below.

As mentioned, this is a DSP(digital signal processing) receiver whereby the analog signal is converted todigital format so that it may be manipulated for better reception. Variousprocesses within the receiver offer improved signal handling capability, reduced noise levels, and enhanced capabilities with AGC and IFbandwidths. This DSP integration and signal path allow the receiver tooperate superior to virtually any receiver that we have tested. There maybe a couple of receivers that have an operation or two that we prefer, but thisdoes not make them superior receivers per se.

Apparently we are not the onlyperson that recognizes this receiver\'s capabilities. World Radio andTelevision Handbook states:

\"Underneath the unassumingexterior is an extraordinarily capable receiver which in some ways offers thebest HF reception performance that we have ever seen.\"

\"The final verdict is thatthe Kneisner & Doering KWZ-30 is an receiver that should be carefullyconsidered by those seeking the best possible performance.\"

Radio Netherlands TestReviewstates:

\"The KWZ-30 probably isn\'tthe receiver of choice for a beginner or strictly a program listener, but forintermediate to advanced shortwave listeners that appreciate an advancedtechnology receiver, this receiver is a beauty. We give it 5starson our 1 to 5 rating scale.\"

Because this is a DSP receiver, the DSP controls such functions as operating mode, noise reduction, notch, squelch, passband, and AGC.Utilizing dual processors, theKWZ-30 is ableto offer features not typically associated with analogreceivers. For instance, there are 100 separate settings for the noisereduction. We have used thevariability of settingsin thenoise reduction to enable us to hear a clearer signalby minimizing thenoise without adversely affecting the signal. Basically, you would turnon the noise reduction and vary the intensity of the reduction weighing noiseversus the loss of fidelity of the signal and work to keep the noise reductionat the best setting for best signal. The 100 settings for noise reductiongives the user a fantastic amount of flexibility for controlling band and atmospheric noise.

The DSP circuitry in the IFbandwidths is exceptional. Most receivers with standardbandwidthfilters will usually have 2 IF filters, but can have as many as 6filters. This canaffect the ability to receive certain modes ofsignals. For instance, you may be able to receive AM signals, butwill need a narrower filter for SSB and an even narrower filter for CW.If your receiver doesn\'t have the proper bandwidths, you will have compromisedreception. However, with the KWZ-30 receiver, you willdiscover 14bandwidths that begin at 50 Hz and extend ever wider up to 9 KHz. This willallow reception for Digital,RTTY, CW,SSB,AM and narrow FMmodes without thenecessity to purchase additional bandwidthfilters. Then not only do you cover all reception modes, but you haveoptional filters within each mode...sharp or standard CW, narrow or widesideband, or narrow, medium or wide AM! Here is a list of the IFbandwidths as seen on the display:

When using the AGC with thisreceiver, you have wonderful capabilities to expand the settings to meet yourrequirements and preferences as the DSP offers so much more flexibility. For instance, most receivers offer AGC fast, slow, and off. Some may evenoffer the option of medium AGC. But with the KWZ-30, you can also setitems such as attack, hold, decay, and digital gain. The only otherreceiver that we have used with these features retails for over $4,200!You can see the AGC options here and would set the option by pressing thecorresponding number on the keypad:

What we find fascinating withthe KWZ-30 is that it was designed and manufactured by Mr. Kneisner and hissmall team as a cottage type industry unit. Unlike some of the major manufacturersthat have scores of technical and marketing people, the KWZ-30 was brought tomarket on a shoestring budget. Considering the design and performance ofthe receiver, this is actually remarkable. We like to consider this likethe Lamborghini of shortwave receivers....elite, high end, and small productionrun. However Mr. Kneisner passed away in June of 2011 so now thisreceiver, the remarkable achievement that it is, can no longer be manufacturedand it\'s scarcity is forever guaranteed.

One of the things that we havenoticed in visiting hobby radio sites over the years is discussion concerningthe tuning of any given receiver. This can include such things as feel, tuning resolution, and tuning speed. As for feel on the KWZ-30, it ishard for us to imagine a more pleasant tuning arrangement. The tuningknob is heavy machined metal surrounded by a band of rubber and has the highestdegree of professional ergonomic feel to it. When spinning the knob, theweight of the machined metalpropels it easily across the receiving bandwitha flywheel effect. Additionally, due to the inclusion of DSP,both tuning resolution and tuning speed can be user driven. The tuningresolution can be altered and can be set for tuning steps as slight as a singlehertz. The tuning speed can be adjusted for your individual taste....likeit fast or like it slow, the KWZ-30 can accommodate whatever you desire foryour listening needs and listening style. Thus, the KWZ-30 can be set toany number of user preferences regardless of how particular you may be withyour needs.

The KWZ-30 uses the DSPtechnology to eliminate the need for a carrier in the AM mode. In effect, this eliminates the need for synchronous detection as there is no carriersignal to become distorted over long transmission distance. Additionally, since the receiver tunes in such fine resolution, you can easily to AMbroadcast signals in sideband using ECSS (exalted carrier selectable sideband)which offers excellent intelligibility with minimal fade distortion. Also, by tuning AM signals in sideband, you can choose either the upper orlower sideband to avoid side channel interference. And because the KWZ-30offers such flexibility with bandwidths and passband tuning in sideband, youcan listen to a signal using wide upper or lower sideband to maximize theblocking of side channel interference while retaining the highest fidelity. Here is a list of operating modes available to the user:

Another thing that is reallyunusual about this receiver is that the headphone jack is set for use withstereo headphones. We discovered this by accident when our standardmonoheadphones did not work except by partially removing them from thejack. By using stereo headphones, we got excellent sound and receptionthat we could not get with my typical mono headphones. Of course this isnot always a benefitas duringDXing, but for program listening tostrong signals, you will hear a wonderful sound on shortwave that you neverknew existed. The signal will not be in stereo, per se, but the use ofhigh end stereo headphones will enable you to hear the highs and lows thatoften get attenuated out of the audio path.

Regarding the power supply, youcannot use a standard AC adapter with this receiver. The draw of thereceiver is 2.5 amps if turned up loudand if you do not use a goodregulated power supply, the receiver begins to do funky things on the displaywhereby some of the display will become scrambled or disappear altogether. We discovered this by accident and then was informed by a seasoned KWZ-30owner that a good power supply is an absolute necessity when using thisreceiver. Accordingly, we have included a 3 amp power supply with thissale so that you do not need to purchase such a thing separately.Normally such a PS will cost around $40 - $50.

Let us now list some of thefeatures of this receiver:

  • Tuning range of 50 KHz to 30 MHz (with reduced sensitivitydown to 6 KHz)
  • Operational Modes of AM, LSB, USB, Digital, CW1, CW2, CW3,and FM

  • 14 Bandwidth choices of 50 Hz to 9 KHz
  • Dual VFO\'s
  • AGC that can be user set
  • Notch
  • Noise Reduction that can be user set
  • Tuning resolution that can be user set from 1 Hz to 50 KHz
  • Tuning speed that can be user set
  • Menu languages of English, German, or French
  • S-meter that can be set for hold time
  • 4 soft keys that can be programmed with user preference (asbandwidth, VFO, mode)
  • 250 Memories that can store frequency, mode, notch, passband tuning, noise reduction settings, andfilter bandwidth
  • Passband tuning
  • Large forward facing speaker capable of handling up to 8 wattsand delivering nice sound
  • Headphone jack
  • Line out jack
  • RS-232 jack for computer control
  • Heavy duty front tilt feet
  • We have thoroughly enjoyedusing this receiver the time it has been in our possession and there are only acouple of worthy competitors in this price class. But the KWZ-30 offersterrific programmable features not found in other units at any price class. It is a shame that they are so rare and that the technology to produce such aninstrument is not currently being exploited in the buyer\'s market.Computer programmable DSP receivers are all the rage, but this is one of thelast and best \"hands on\" receivers ever made by anyone anywhere.

If you have any questions, weare happy to try to answer them for you. One of the best sources ofinformation for this unusual receiver can be found in the extensive review onthis site:

Most questions will tend torelate to shipping the unit to your destination. For buyers here in theUSA, you may use the calculator for your cost to ship. This is aheavy receiver made heavier with the inclusion of the 3 amp power supply. The cost of shipping includes all necessary packing materials, actual shipping, plus full insurance.

Those buyers who reside outsidethe USA may also purchase this receiver. We have shipped to 98 countriesduring the past few years and are happy to ship to your location if it can be fully insured. Shipping will only be possible via Express mail so that we may be able to fully insure the unit during transit. For many EU countries, this will eliminate shipment to you unless you would like to purchase FedEx shipping for a considerably elevated cost. Please remember that the shipping cost does not include anyimport, duty, customs, or VAT fees which will be extra if they are collected inyour country. It would be our recommendation that you do not have us ship the power supply to you and saveyou the cost of the additional weight for shipping. Should you decide tohave us remove the power supply from the shipping box, we can reduce theshipping price by $30. Thus, you can save the cost of $30 and apply thatto a power supply configured to your local current requirements as long as isis a reliable regulated power supplycan providea minimum of 3 ampsat 12 volts DC.
