Large Antique Black Forest Rare Hunter Form Case Carved Cuckoo Clock Early 1900s:
$1450.00

This large intricately carved antique Black Forest Cuckoo clock likely dates from the early 1900s. It measures 30 inches tall (without the pendulum and weights), 21 inches wide, and 14 inches deep. The hunter case features a carved crest including a large deer head with antlers and glass eyes, twenty trailing oak leaves, branches, and acorns that can be detached from the roof line. The carved and painted cuckoo bird appears from behind the door on the half-hour (once) and hour (signalingthe correct hourwith coo-coos). The rare pair of finely detailed, fully carved, European mountain goats (Capra Ibex) hang from either side of the case, again accompanied by more trailing oak leaves. There is a carved bugle style bezel with a wood dial that has bone hands and applied hour numerals. The thirty-hour brass movement also strikes the half hour and hour using a coiled gong on the inside of the back board. Below the mountain goats are more oak leaves, a large well-carved hunting bag with tassels, and crossed hunting muskets. The pendulum has an adjustable leaf that can increase or decrease the clock\'s tempo, and there are two hanging pinecone shaped cast weights used to drive the movement.
Overall, the clock is in very good working condition; that is, the time is accurate, the cuckoo appears from behind the door, the bellows work, and the hours sound correctly with a gong. Both the carving and patina are exceptional.Cosmetically, there are minor losses to the tips of both ears on the deer, some tiny losses to several oak leaves, and a 1/2 inch loss to the barrel of the right musket. The goats\' horns appear to be old replacements, and the deer antlers have re-glued repairs. There is some discoloration to several numerals that have not been cleaned. There is an area of veneer loss to the right side of the case which is not noticeable looking at the clock from the front.
