The Following Paragraph is from \"U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production\" book, by Craig Riesch, page 69;

The Operating Slide Spring Housing was a detachable tube that fitted into a machined clearance on the right side of the receiver. It held the operating slide spring in place. The housing was used by Winchester and Rock Ola until mid-1943, and used by Quality Hardware throughout their production. Inland used the operating slide spring housing to repair damaged receivers in mid-1943. All Spring Tube housings were originally parkerized, and Quality Hardware was the only manufacturer to mark their housings, a capital \"Q\" on the solid end.\"
