A magnificent and important vintage hat from the legendary Couture designer, Lilly Dache\'. Quite unique and special. Vintage is late 1930s to very early 1940s. Huge wide brim cartwheel, made of lustrous & sturdy natural straw in a classic shade of navy blue. Trimmed in stunning French double sided silk satin ribbons that are thick and weighty, with a good drape, and sewn to the hat in a very unusual way that is fabulous. The hat has a small, shallow, open crown, from which spills the silk ribbons which meet underneath the brim in thick big double bow and then cascade down the back of the wearer. WOW! The hat is meant to be worn at a decided TILT so that the underside of the hat can be seen and the big bow gets noticed. I have never seen a hat with this ribbon treatment, it reminds me of an 18th Century lady\'s hat as worn in the film \"The Duchess\" or \"Marie Antoinette\". Very good, clean and fresh, well preserved condition. An important hat for the serious millinery collector. Fresh to market, never before offered for sale, from the estate of the original owner who wore it once and stored it in a box in her smoke free mansion home here in the Hollywood Hills. The inside grosgrain head size ribbon is all hand stitched in, and this hat is hand crafted, a true millinery masterpiece. Beige and brown custom label is LILLY DACHE\', Paris, New York, 78 East 56th Street, New York. I show the hat on a full sized adult millinery bust. Sized to fit a size 22 average head. The label is sewn partially under the blue silk ribbons, as the ribbons there overwrap the entire crown area. The hat can be worn with the ribbons cascading down the side of the face as well, for a different look. The ends of the ribbons are purposely fringed for a soft effect.
