This historic antique circa 1880\'s Knights Templar sword was made by the world famous \"Ames Sword Company\". A highly symbolic item, it is also very ornate. The sword features a central crest consisting of a dramatic Skull and Crossed Bones. The overall design is considered a favourite of those who appreciate the esoteric and mystical. The sword is in pretty good vintage condition with only some normal expected wear. The casting and mounts have a brass foundation and have been plated with the very attractive and rare \"Frosted Silver\" technique. Because of age, there are areas of transparency where some of the brass tint shows. But that is common with genuine antiques of over 100 years of age. The back of the wooden grip has a few small chips (which are remedied with colour), but it is most solid,strong and looks good. Any age issues aside, this is a very attractive item. There are no serious propblems here in our view. The mounts are all detailed and historical. The middle mount features a unique interpretation of a Medieval Knight Warrior wielding his Sabre. Although the scene illustrates a scene from the Middle Ages, the charachter himself looks much more consistent with the 19th Century. This dynamic circa 1880’s Knight Templars Sword by the legendary “Ames Sword Company” is saturated with the most meaningful Masonic symbols that evolved with over hundreds of years of philosophic and mystical thought. And some say the origins are much older. This particular pattern of sword is also reflective of the greatest artistic achievements of the individuals originally responsible for designing Masonic swords. From the old literature we have studied, most of these Swords (& jewels, regalia) were indeed designed by artisans who were members of the Craft. The “”Ames Sword Company” along with “M. C. Lilley & Company”, “The Pettibone Brothers”, and “William Horstmann of Philadelphia” are considered the most important manufacturers of Fraternal, Masonic and Military items in history. The workmanship on this sword is typical of high quality Ames Craftsmanship. A superior sword made by a great maker. The theme of SKULL & CROSSED BONES is central to this entire Sword. Steeped in the ancient traditions of both Freemasonry and the original Medieval Knights Templars, the importance of this pattern of Sword can not be emphasized enough. The SKULL & BONES appear in a SCULPTED SILVER RELIEF form right underneath the wooden grip. Directly underneath that Skull is a pronounced MALTESE CROSS within a CREST, showing a direct linkage to ancient history. The relevance of this Cross is stressed by its imposing position. The reverse side features equally esoteric Templar symbols, the Serpent coiling around the Cross. The two stylized Hand-Guards, the Quillons represent TWO ANCIENT SCROLLS. They are not bones as is often assumed. Yet the sword is ingeniously designed so that the shape of the bones complement or rather mirror the shape of the ancient scrolls. This is done for good reason. And here too, we are dealing with ancient philosophy and ideals. Look carefully and you will see that each scroll is tied together. Unrolled they expose truth. This Scroll-Quillons pattern in and of itself was borrowed from certain military Sword examples. The TEMPLAR CROSS THROUGH CROWN as well as ANCIENT MEDIEVAL CRESTS and SUITS OF ARMOR with MALTESE CROSSES, SWORDS & WEAPONRY all decorate the scabbard in classical silver. The owner’s name is etched on one side of the blade. \"HUGH DE PAYANS COMMANDERY\" appears on the other. The \"Ames\" makers name is there as well, although it is hidden under the back langet. The Medieval Style Knights Head Pommel is a sculpture in miniature. An outstanding antique sword. In its scabbard, the sword measures approximately 36 ¾ inches. Alone, the sword is about 34 ½ inches with the blade is 28 ½ inches. Do not permit this antique Ames Knights Templar Sword to escape!
