Fred Stevens Jr. - Grey Squirrel
A Navajo medicine man who spent years working in collaboration with Luther Douglas, an Indian trader from Sun Valley, Idaho, before a satisfactory permatizing technique was developed. Stevens first began experimenting with methods to permatize as early as 1946, but it was not until sometime in the mid - 1950\'s that his efforts met with success. A short time later, sand paintings began to be marketed by other Navajo artists.

Male Black Harvest DeityThis is a Navajo Indian sand painting of the male black harvest deity. It is made during the eight days and the nights curative ceremony called the night chant.Black darkness and red afterglow surround the face. White forehead denote conscience, yellow chine line denote corn yellow path.Two eagle tails and three owl plumes are tied to the side of the head.He holds a spruce bough with left hand and a white ground rattle in right hand.Arm streamers and sash are of the rainbows.
