PENN 49 Wide Spool Reel-Unusual.

This is a Penn 49 Deep Sea Reel with a wide plastic spool.

The reel is in excellent condition mechanically and on appearance. The reel weighs 32.5 oz. The spool measures 2-7/16\" and is in perfect condition, but the line capacity is unknown.

It appears to have been the kind of 49A reels sold only in South Africa in the late 1950\'s and early 1960\'s. We make no claim that this is one of them, but said reels are described in Michael Cacioppo’s book, The Chronological History of Penn Reel 1932-1957 © 2014 on pages 179 thru 181. The wide spool domestic or export 49 reels were never mentioned in the Penn catalogs.
