Rare 1962 HEUER Monte Carlo 3-Button Rally Timer / Stopwatch w Chrome Case +Box:
$1338.00

Up for sale is a used vintage Heuer Monte Carlo dashboard rally timer / stopwatch, first purchased in 1962, featuring a special 12-hour Jump-Disc display window which indicates the elapsed count of hours.

This timepiece is a rather heavy, shiny chrome-cased stopwatch with a chromed dash mounting plate. The back of the metal dash mount plate is stamped with the following inscription:

ED.HEUER & Co

Swiss

There is a Heuer original serial number engraved in thechrome case nextto the buttons. The serial number is \"17652\" (see item photo).

This is Monte Carlo timer is the classic 3-button series (manufactured between 1958 and 1967), which pre-dates the subsequent 2-button line of chrome Heuer Monte Carlo timers.

The dial also identifies it as the early make of the product line, as the white label \"PAT. APPL. For\" ( patent applied for ) is visible on the dial face (see photos). This label only addeared on the very early Monte Carlo units.

The original Heuer storage box is an older and harder to find yellow box design withsilver-toned Heuer logo. The cardboardbox appears somewhat aged and worn (see photos).

Item Condition

Important Note: There is usually a delay of 1/2 second between pushing the start button and when the watch begins to tick. Therefore this vintage timepiece may likely benefit from a cleaning service from a qualified watchmaker. After 53 years of use and storage there is likely a small part that needs lubrication to kick the escapement mechanism in a faster and more reliable manner.

Note that any after-purchasecleaningor other service is not included as a part of this sale. Although the watch does currently keep good time once started, this watch may not always start ticking, or may lag by approximately 0.6 to 1.0 seconds, when you depress the start button, and therefore this item is sold in As-Is condition, with no operational guarantee offered or implied.

The Cardboard box is aged and has some wear. See photos.

The watch, crystal, mounting plate attachment are in excellent cosmetic condition with no significant scratches or flaws. This particular timer is 53 years old, and has accumulated a little bit of dust in the corners of the case. I did not want to touch the case nor attempt to clean it so it would remain in its original legacy condition.

The crystal is clear and in excellent condition. I am not able to detect any significant marks, scratches or scuffs on the crystal.

The watch dial and white hands are in very good condition. Please refer to item photos.

The rotating bezel ring with orange-yellow triangular pointer is in excellent condition, rotates easily, and has no cracks or apparent flaws.

The hour jump disc is in good condition, although the white background of the \"7\" digit position appears to have darkened a bit (slightly grayed instead of white) due to age or prolonged exposure to light. (Definitely due to fading, i.e. not any rusting etc.)

Item history:

This timepiece definitely has an interesting history...

In 1962 this Monte Carlo rally timer (Serial Number 17652) was bought new in Germany by an American race car driver. For many years in the 1960s as a member of the Great Lakes Sports Car Club, the original owner used this Monte Carlo timer in the ice-car racing circuit, including the annual \"Frostbite 500\" rally (average race day hightemperaturewas -4 degrees F) , the \"Milwaukee Mile\" race event on a 1.8 mile road circuit on the infield oftheWisconsinState Fair, and several \"Treasure Hunt\" events during the summer months. Anecdotally, drivers back then were allowed to use special steel-studded tires to cut into the road ice.

Other Item Details

The hours indicator window counts from \"0\" hours to \"12\" hours, and repeatsagain from \"0\".

Every 60 minutes the hours digit \'snaps\' into the next hour digit position. It\'s kind of fun (for me at least) to watch the disc digit jump on the hour.

All timing functions have been tested and verified as working properly. The timer winds, starts, stops and resumes using the main winding crown button. The timer also properly aligns it minutes andsecondshands cleanly to the \"0\" position when the reset button is pressed.

The left push button advances resets the hour disk to \"0\". This leftmost push-button, by intended design, advances the digit 1 hour at a time until \"0\" is reached.

As tested starting from a full wind, thestopwatch has a continuous running powerreserve of over 30 hours.

This stopwatch appears to keep good time However, I cannot make any guarantee of its continued timing accuracy or reliability either now or in the future, as this watch is at least 53 years old.

The timer case is made of polished chrome over a steel base metal comosition.

The item\'s original Heuer Monte Carlo cardboard box is in fair condition (see photos).

No other accessory items are included with this mechanical watch (i.e. no manual, warranty card, etc.)
