BluesVintage Guitars Inc. of Nashville, Tennessee is proud to offer one of therarest Gibson L-5 archtops in existence. This is an incredible vintage 1964Gibson L-5 Custom, built with the scale length of a Gibson Byrdland AND an absolutelymagnificent Cherry Sunburst finish. If you’ve EVER seen a morebeautiful vintage Gibson L-5, we want to know about it because we surely haveNEVER seen one as nice as this one. This is one pretty guitar … PERIOD!

This L-5Custom built with the scale length of a Gibson Byrdland – which is slightlyshorter – makes this one very rare archtop guitar. We’ve never seen another onelike it. We even asked several of our colleagues in the industry and NO ONE weasked had ever run across another Gibson L-5 Custom with the scale length of aGibson Byrdland. We believe this one is the the ONLY L-5 ever made with this scale length. The difference is a guitar that’s not as cumbersome as some ofthe L-5s can be. The slightly shorter scale length makes this one lighter, and also a easier to play up and down the neck. This is a very well balanced guitar, and it plays and sounds as good as it looks. The new owner of thisincredible L-5 Custom will NOT be disappointed in any way.

Overall, this magnificent custom-ordered L-5 Custom is in EXCELLENT condition, and theoriginal Cherry Sunburst finish hasn’t faded one bit – it’s just as brilliantand bright as the day it left Gibson’s factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1964.The serial number is 67828, which correctly dates it to 1964. And the serialnumber on the orange oval label inside the guitar matches the serial number onthe back of the headstock. The back of the headstock also sports the originalsticker of the music store it was ordered from, which was Jerome’s GuitarCentre in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Theguitar’s condition is nothing short of remarkable, and its overall tone andplayability is exactly what you’d expect from vintage Gibson L-5 Custom archtop– very evenly balanced tone, with amazing projection, resonance and sustainwhen played acoustically. This one, of course, was also outfitted with a singleJohnny Smith-style pickup (you could order them with one or two pickups) thatis warm and clear when plugged in, and confidently delivers the most classic andcoveted jazz tones in the world. The original pickguard sports one Volume andone Tone knob, and all the electronics function as they should – without anyissues whatsoever.

All ofthe hardware is also original, including the Grover enclosed stairstep tuners, andthe wider silver center insert tailpiece with the hole at the bottom fortension adjustment with an Allen Wrench. The headstock sports Gibson’s iconicflowerpot peghead inlay, and the original black truss rod cover is surroundedby white binding and the word “CUSTOM” written vertically down its center.Surprisingly, there is minimal tarnishing on any of the gold hardwarecomponents. The tailpiece shows the most fading (not much at all, actually),while the gold plating on the tuners and pickup is fairly intact. Thethree-piece maple neck has a truly wonderful and very comfortable “C” profile, and the Ebony fretboard with all original Pearl inlays is a pleasure to play. Both individual notes and chords jump right off the fingerboard with ease, andthe classic rounded cutaway allows easy access to the upper register of frets.

Bottomline is this rare vintage Gibson is one lucky find, and it’s going to makesomeone a very happy new owner of one of the finest Gibson L-5 Customs inexistence. The guitar also comes housed in a period correct Lifton archtopcase.
