Simply click on a flag and you will be able to see the pole andfinial on most flags, and will quickly see this same style eagle on many of the flags.

It islikely this eagle was made in this area or part of thecountry during the war. The regiment who used this eagle is not known, as most finials were taken home bysoldiers at the conclusion of the war assouvenirsor given as a token of respect to a fallen leader of a regiment and the history is lost over the future generations. Some were removed from the poles when the flags were conserved or restored and the history was sometimes lost in the process. These rarely ever come up for sale!

This eagle retains most of the original gold gilding and has aged well over the last 150 years with the slightest bit of oxidation. It shows light wear polish as seen on the chest, head, and claws. Its shows exposure to theelements or being carried in wetweather based on the blackening of the bronze. It is also the early pinned tailvariationwith early style loose style legs and measures a little over 5 7/8 inches tall by 6 inches wide. All in all a super nice rare pictured style civil war eagle finial!!

I specialize in studying and researching these specific rare relics from the civil war and occasionally sell duplicates of ones I already have and sometimes thin down my eagle collection... This is the only type of civil war relic I collect and specialize in and devote my time to researching. Feel free to ask any questions, and feel confident in offerding as my response should speak for itself. Payment is expected within 3 days of sale end. Good luck offerding!!

Per a state regulation, New York regiments were required to have a gilted eagle on all the flag staffs!
1858 NY Regulation: Article XXXIV.
FLAGS, COLORS, STANDARDS, GUIDONS—NATIONAL FLAG. 723. Every pike-pole of staff to which the flags, standards, guidons or colors above provided are to be attached, will be surmounted with a gilt eagle. SOURCE: General Regulations for the Military Forces of the State of New York, 1858 (Albany: Weed, Parsons & Co., 1858), pp. 128-130, par. 717-723.

Civil war battle eagles are one of the most misunderstood and unclarified relics, yet one of the most important and \"symbols of freedom\" of the civil war. To imagine how many lives were lost defending the flags and protecting these eagles, were a true symbol of sacrifice and the preservation of freedom during the Civil War. Based on the details of each individual eagle, can help to date each type and examples based on historic photo\'s, research, and musuem information. Unfortunately, most advanced civil war collections lack these pieces, due to the lack of knowledge on these rare relics of the war. Documented eagles, are much rarer than any spade or spear type flag pole topper!!
