Rarely seen 1829-1859 Fulham Pottery church sprigged salt glaze stoneware jug:
$84.99

We are listing this rarely seen 1829-1859 Fulham Pottery (unmarked) salt glazed stoneware jug whose sprigs include the church sprig which is normally only seen on jugs made much later in the 1800s (when the pottery was run by Bailey & Co.). Fulham Pottery was founded by the famous English potter John Dwight in the late 1600s and descended down through members of his family until the late 1850s. Fulham jugs throughout the 1800s have the uniquely shaped bottom handle terminal (with three screws) that is on this jug, but I believe it must have been made during the 1829-1859 ownership period of Charles White (the final family descendant). The Fulham church sprig seen on this jug is normally associated with the later ownership of the pottery by Bailey & Co. from 1874-1889, but Bailey installed all new equipment in the pottery and his jugs (which are typically marked with his name) have the crisp sprig details you see on Doulton pieces in the late 1800s (whereas the sprigs on this jug were obviously made from old worn down molds). The jug has a very nice silver rim (it appears to be sterling, but it is not marked), a Toby sprig typical of the 1840s (see page 224 of Ivor Noel Hume\'s authoritative article on brown jug sprigs in the 2004 Ceramics in America), a rabbit hunt down below (rather than the typical fox or stag hunts), and very unusual gate sprigs. The jug is almost 6 inches tall, 5.5 inches at its widest point, and it is in very good overall condition. There are typical separation lines on the two dog sprigs and the handle terminal, a couple of minor underglaze flaws on the shoulder toward the back, and a tiny dent in the silver rim at the back. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself (the silver has not been professionally polished). A very uniquely sprigged old jug.
