Sony ICF-SW55 Shortwave AM FM Radio Receiver Ensemble ***NICE UNIT***:
$399.95

This worldband receiver is a Sony ICF-SW55 that appears to be ingood overallcosmetic condition. There are minimal signs of use and the radio appears to be in above average cosmetic condition. Please look closely at our pictures for specifics on cosmetic condition.

Included in the sale arethe SW55 radio in it\'s carry tote case, AC adapter, copy of the user manual, connector jack for wire antennas, copyof the service manual, copies of an advertisements, and receiver reviews. In addition, this ensemble comes with a CD that contains the manuals and a couple of other documents pertaining to the SW55 radio. Finally, the radio comes with a compliment of new batteries installed.

If you are looking for a nice shortwave radio in fantastic overall condition, this Sony SW55may be a consideration for you and we are providing some additional informationas follows.

The SW55 has some really neat features that are not often foundon shortwave radios and it is a great radio to have at home for radio receptionor to take on the road during travel. Forreception, the SW55 receives Longwave from 150 to 530 KHz, Mediumwave from530-1700 KHz (AM broadcast), Shortwave from 1701 to 30000 KHz, and FM from 88 to108 MHz. Because it receives all of theprimary entertainment and communication bands, this radio is a great all aroundradio for casual or even emergency use.

Sony has really done a fantastic job of design with the radioand the SW55 has many important features and a couple other features not oftenfound on other receivers. The designersof the SW55 have really outdone themselves with the feature laden set and indoing so, have made it really compact. It measures only 7 1/2 inches by 5 inches andis about the size of a paperback book. Typicallya portable radio\'s size is somewhat somewhat determined by the need to have aspeaker on the front, and thus, a radio is often larger to accommodate thespeaker and operating controls. Well, the Sony engineers designed a way around this....by placing the speaker on theback of the radio and having a sound duct that directs the reception to thefront through a letterbox port. You cansee this port by looking just above the large LCD display as can be seen here. The sound is surprisingly stout for such asmall receiver:

Another neat feature of thisradio is the way you can locate world time (also known as Universal Time). If you press the world time button you can seeeither local or world time as it relates to the world map on the display. Lines will actually appear on the screen toshow you the location of the time pressed. What we find to be helpful is that once you program inyour local time, you can press the night / time diff button and the worlddisplay will show you a world map highlighted by lines depicting night time inthe affected areas of the world. Thus, when you listen on shortwave, you can get an idea of the time and the daylightas it is shown across the world. Reallycool !

The radio has up to 125 memoriesand many of the shortwave broadcasters main frequencies are already programmedinto the radio. You call up the page ofthe station you want to hear and can press the memory button to tune into thestation. If you happen to tune aroundand hear a station, you can actually save it to one of the pages for futurerecall. The pages actually have alphacharacters so that you can easily identify which page you are on as the pagewill read \"BBC\" or \"CANADA\" or something else, but you getthe idea. Think of it as an electroniclogbook.

Using the radio and it\'s advancedfeatures is rather easy to master due to its intuitive layout. However, there is a user manualincluded and we are also including the manual on CD along with the radio to assist withthose features that may require a little more learning.

This receiver also receivesamateur radio signals as it can translate from upper or lower sideband andeven has 2 bandwidths to be able to eliminate side channel interference whenlistening on shortwave. While it does notwork as well as a professional amateur desktop receiver on sideband, thetranslation certainly is good enough to satisfy for casual listening andimpressive in it\'s own way.

As for the bandwidths, there is achoice of wide or narrow to balance fidelity vs side channel interference. You would leave the Sony SW55 in the widebandwidth for most listening. However,if the band is crowded, you would shift into narrow to slice the signal better. This is not unlike shifting a vehiclefrom 2 wheel to 4 wheel drive in more difficult circumstances and it is a nicefeature to have available.

We could go on and on about allthe features and how to use them...the sleep and recording timers, built inalarm clock, tone control, sensitivity control, various methods of tuning, programming, etc. but this has been covered in other professional columns.
