Devon England, is the home of Tony Dixon who has been making flutes, pipes and whistles for many years. An accomplished player of all three instruments, he doesn\'t let an instrument out of his workshop that he wouldn\'t be happy to play himself.
Polymer? ABS? Aluminium? Brass? Nickel?The different materials are come from a blend of practical reasons and musical tonal reasons. The polymer material provides a warm tone, aluminium and brass produce brighter tones.
The flute heads are polymer and the whistle heads are ABS (another type of polymer) because each material is better suited to the mouth action involved.
ABS is harder and more suited to a mouthpiece whereas polymer provides a better shape and feel to accommodate the embouchure (the shape of the lips when blowing across the mouth hole).
