Union Pacific Engine 1, The General Sherman
Union Pacific\'s first locomotive steam engine was named in honor of the famous Civil War General. It was delivered to the Omaha, NB Train Yard in July, 1865, weighing in at between 10 and 12 tons. Its one pair of screws werefour and a half or five feet in diameter, with inside connections and four ordinary track wheels in front. The tender was not apparently different from those now in use, except in size. F. A. Stearns of Massachusetts was master mechanic.
The \"General Sherman\"served the railroaduntil about 1865 or 1880, and was the first locomotive to cross the Colorado River, into the town of Columbus, in the year 1867.
