VERY RARE antique 1901 Anatomy in its Relation to Art book McClellan 1st edition:
$365.00

Hello antique book lovers. THIS LISTING IS FOR...this EXTREMELY RARE, antique book titled \"ANATOMY IN ITS RELATION TO ART - An exposition of the bones and muscles of the human body with especial reference to their influence upon its actions and external form\" by George McClellan M.D, Professor of Anatomy at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, etc. , etc. Author of the McClellan\'s Regional Anatomy, and the Anatomy of Children\". Title page also reads \"Illustrated by 338 original drawings and photographs made by the author and expressly prepared for this work\". Philadelphia and London, W.B. Saunders & Company 1901\". The copyright page simply reads \"Copyright 1900 by George McClellan, M.D.\". I am not an expert on old books but I will do my best to describe this as accurately as I can and to show lots of photos for you. Based on the copyright page I believe this is a FIRST EDITION. This book is VERY RARE. I found a copy of this book located in the FALK LIBRARY where it can be viewed BY APPOINTMENT. This antique beauty is in it\'s original condition with it\'s original cover. It is a large, heavy, hardbound book full of drawings and photographs of people and art and muscle formations and skeletal formations. It is spectacular. It measures 11.75 by 9 by 2 inches and weighs nearly 7 lbs! It still has the original paper title on the spine. The hardcover looks to be a navy blue linen. There is still the original tissue page. I don\'t see any writing anywhere inside except for a name in small print on the top corner of the title page - see photo. Book pages are not torn or stained. Photographs and drawings are magnificently done. They will show a man standing in a certain position or a work of art featuring people in certain positions then it will show the skeletal makeup of that position and the muscular makeup of that position. Fascinating. A VERY RARE must have for the antique medical book collector. The binding is loose in some areas but overall I am very impressed with the condition of this 113 year old anatomy book. I include a dozen photographs for you but if you have questions I will try my best to answer them for you. Here is some wonderful information about this book from the University of Pittsburg, Health Sciences Library System website: The 19th century invention of photography captured the attention of the medical profession. This new technology offered physicians a more objective and accurate tool to record medical conditions and observations than the illustrations they used in the past. The first application of photography in medicine was in 1840 when Alfred Donné took successful images of bones and dental tissue, shortly after the public presentation of daguerreotype as a new technique.1 The first medical book illustrated with photographs was the Album de Photographies Pathologiques, published in 1862.2 Falk Library owns the impressive Anatomy in Its Relation to Art by George McClellan, published in Philadelphia in 1901, which is a fascinating example of photography used for illustrative medical purposes. George McClellan (1849-1913) was the founder of Jefferson Medical College and an artist as well as a physician and teacher. He is best-known for his Regional Anatomy in Its Relation to Medicine and Surgery, for which he not only performed the dissections and wrote the text, but also photographed and hand-colored the original images for reproduction. Anatomy in Its Relation to Art is a lesser-known but equally interesting book. It is a study of the influence of skeleton and muscles on the surface form of a figure in motion and at rest, illustrated by 338 original drawings and photographs made by the author. It showcases McClellan’s skill as both an artist and a physician. The book was donated to the library in 1932 by the estate of Stewart LeRoy McCurdy, AM, MD, professor of anatomy, oral and general surgery and one of the founders of Pittsburgh Dental College. The book is located in the Rare Books Room at Falk Library and can be viewed by appointment. As usual, I show lots of photos for you so please view all photos for a true indication of the nice condition of this rare, antique book. Please keep in mind, in regards to shipping, that this book is large and weighs nearly 7 lbs. I will be offering a MEDIA MAIL rate for this piece but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that the lucky winning buyer choose PRIORITY MAIL because I would hate for it to get damaged in shipping.
