Both stamps were canceled in Mars, Pennsylvania, the top one on July 20, 1976, the date the Viking I landed on Mars, the bottom one on September 3, 1976, the date Viking II landed on Mars.Running down the left side of the cover are the words, \"Viking I 7/4/76\". The hand-drawn red, black, and blue cachet shows an image of the Viking 1 Mars lander. The date July 4, 1776 runs horizontally and the date July 4, 1976 runs vertically in the upper left corner of the cachet image. Below the image are the words, \"Viking 1 / American / Birthday Party / Landing on Mars\". In the lower right corner are the initials of the cachet\'s artist. Running down the right side of the cover are the words, \"Viking II 9/3/76\" The serial number of this cover, 171, is written in red in the lower right corner of the cover.Size: 6-9/16 x 3-⅝ \" The cover has never been sealed.
