Before there was Digital Arts, for computing and scientific educational toys, there was ESR. This is a vintage ESR Digi-Comp I polystyrene toy binary mechanical digital computer, that really computes, in its original, unopened box, still sealed in its original plastic wrap (or is it cellophane, maybe?). This computing powerhouse has all of three flip-flops for Boolean logic operations, corresponding to three bits, that are mechanically manipulated / programmed through the use of wires and plastic levers and pegs.
According to the front of the box, this computer can add, subtract, shift, complement, multiply, memorize, compare, play challenging games, solve problems, process data, answer riddles, do the missile count down, satellite re-entry (?!), missile checkbox, and many other problems. Pretty high tech for its day, sounds like. :-)
The box is pretty badly warped from the constant stress of the tight shrink wrap for more than fifty years. Also, the plastic shrink wrap is badly torn in a couple of places, mainly on the lower right front corner, spreading around to the back, as you can see in my pictures. However, most of the plastic wrap is intact --- enough that it is clear that the box has never been opened.
