GJPaw sales ispleased to offer a stunning vintage Apog or Lime Container, from the Kalanguaya ethnic group, Benguet, Philippines. Benguet inthe southern tip of the Cordillera Mountain of northern section of Luzon ishome to three ethnic groups namely the Ibaloi, Kalanguaya and Kankanai. All ofthem are referred to as the Igorots and all three ethnic groups share the samebelief system and also observe common rituals. Lime containers (or Apog) are used inconjunction with thepractice of betel chewing, which used to be prevalent throughout thePhilippines. The tribal people of the Cordillera, carry their containers aroundtheir waists, and most of the men chew betelconstantly. The Igorots believe that the chewing of betel staves off hunger andtiredness as they work long hours in their rice fields. The nut is the fruit ofthe areca palm (areca catechu), and it is chewedtogether with the leaf of the betel piper vine (Piperbetel), from which the name is derived. The nut is cut into segments dabbedwith lime (which is ground and burnt sea-shell), mixed with some water or oiland wrapped in a leaf to form a quid, the chewing of which produces blood-redspittle. In northern Philippines, lime containersare usually carved from wood, bamboo or animal (pig) bone. Many of these are incisedwith delicate geometric patterns and figurative motifs, sometimes furtherdecorated with beads. In the case of small containers, cotton or cloth may beused as stoppers. This exquisitely beautiful lime container is intricately carvedfrom pig bone and features an equally finely carved stopper, lined with cotton. It measures 2 inches in width by 1.5 inches in depth by 7.25 inches in height(5.08 cm by 3.81 cm by 18.4 cm). It is in very good condition, with wearshowing age consistent with usage and a dating to the early 20th century. It would make a superb addition to any collection of S.E.
