Vintage Craftsman Swivel Bench Vise 4\" Jaws No. 5169, 33 Lbs. Made In USA vice:
$26.00

(Full Specs At Bottom Of Listing.)
I\'m really disappointed with this vise. I probably shouldn\'t even be listing it because I don\'t like to sell vises in this condition but I decided to list it as parts / non-working which is sort of accurate. It has issues which I\'m going to bullet point right now.
  • There\'s a break in the swivel base, a chunk is missing from both sides in one section of the swivel recess. You can see this in gallery photo number twelve which will be more clear than an explanation. This isn\'t a catastrophic failure and the base works just fine but if you snug up the swivel lock directly over the break the bottom of the locking stud will be able to pass through the opening and not function as intended. Avoid this spot in the 360 degree swivel range when locking the vise down and you\'ll be fine.
  • The swivel damage I was aware of before I refinished the vise. This next problem, however, I didn\'t know about until I put the vise back together. I originally wrote it off as being old and rusty which should have been corrected with a thorough stripping and cleaning but that didn\'t end up being the case. Basically this vise does not like to open and close, It\'s firm to turn the handle every inch of the way. I examined the threads on the main screw and nut, both look great and it spins fine when these parts are out of the vise. I believe what\'s happening is the slide is tweaked a little bit and the angle of the main screw is tilted inside which can cause resistance. You can try to straighten the slide if you like, maybe heat it up, and that might fix it but as of right now this vise is difficult to open and close. With a little muscle you can open and and close the jaws but it\'s possible something could eventually break from prolonged stress.
So why did I list it? Well, these are usually very nice vises. Made during the 1940\'s they\'re heavy for their size and well built. Somebody must have mistreated it to create this type of problem. I put quite a bit of time into it and maybe, just maybe, somebody out there could use the other parts with their good dynamic jaw they already own. I just couldn\'t bring myself to toss it in the scrap metal pile after putting in a ton of effort.
I feel this vise was from Craftsman\'s best era. All of the models from this time period were extremely well built and with fantastic design. A far cry from the Sears we know today, or what\'s left of it. I did a full restoration on it. Everything was stripped down and and the cast iron was resprayed with a baked-on gray enamel. It\'s a well used vise but it ended up looking good and it\'s a real pity the vise doesn\'t work as nice as it looks. I\'ll just say that I\'m let down with the end result.
You can give a shot at truing up the slide or strip it down for parts, whatever works. If there\'s no offers then this vise will be permanently retired and that\'s something which always saddens me.

Sorry but no combined shipping with bench vises, they\'re heavy and easily do damage to other items in the package.
If you have zero response or none within the last year please contact me before offerding.
Thank you for looking.
