Here is a set of vintage Deagan orchestral bells manufactured somewhere between 1910 and 1920. They are in original condition and installed in the original wooden case. They have an amazingly clear sound, have a long \"decay\" and are of the \"flat-top\" design. A curious feature is that the last two upper bells are marked as \"C\" and \"C#\" but sound the actual pitches of \"B\" and \"C\". Several friends who are professional percussionists have not been able to explain this oddly marked progression in the chromatic scale, but pointed out that the pitches produced are the correct ones in the scale [i.e. \"B\" & \"C\"]. The suspension that isolates the bells from the rack have deteriorated to the point that they must be restored for all of the bells to properly resonate. The case is in very solid shape but displays the expected wear for an item that is about 100 years old. . The handle is fabricated of wire and plastic tubing but could easily be replaced with a proper handle. The keyed latch [no key is included] bears the stamped name of the Chicago-based Deagan Company.
