Zenith “Triumph”
Bakelite AM/FM Tube Radio
Model R724

Greetings radio collectors enthusiasts! Looking for a classic mid-century FM/AM tube radio? If so, please take check out this beautiful example of one of several variations of the extremely successful Zenith “Triumph” line of AM/FM tube table radios, model R724 (chassis 7H02Z2), from the mid-50s. The R724 is a fine radio, designed with some of the most reliable and serviceable tube technology developed by the 1950s. By virtue of its 7-tube hand-wired chassis, wire loop AM antenna, separate oscillator/mixer triode sections, permeability-tuned FM front end, two IF stages on both AM & FM, and FM limiter-discriminator, the radio provides superior AM/FM sensitivity, selectivity and gain, such as was only exceeded by larger Zenith chassis of its time. Tone quality is also superior, due to degenerative audio response, an over-sized output transformer and a 5-1/4” speaker that has a large Alnico magnet. To adjust the tone to your individual timbre preference, there is a rotary tone control on the side adjusts both bass and treble. A neon glow lamp above the dial indicates when the radio is on. The FM band can use the AC cord as an antenna, or an external dipole can be connected to the screw terminals on the back. In most applications, the cord antenna does an amazingly good job of receiving FM stations. Power requirement is 120 VAC (or DC). Information on this radio is available for free on line and in Sams Photofact folder 178-17. Recent Service Notes are included with this sale. This Zenith Radio has been serviced, cleaned, polished and detailed inside and out. Its cosmetic condition is quite good, especially considering its age. There is the usual shrinkage around the edges of the grill cloth and a scratch on the dial that was caused by the pointer. The knobs, handle, Zenith emblem and all other external hardware are original. The tube layout diagram on the bottom is present, but is torn and stained. There are no major flaws to mention. The Radio plays well, with very good sensitivity and selectivity, rich and pleasant “tube sound”, and negligible evidence of AC hum on both bands. Five of the seven tubes have been replaced. The audio coupling capacitors have also been replaced. The 1st stage replacement part was installed inside the original Zenith part to maintain an authentic appearance. One section of the FP electrolytic filter capacitor is shunted with a new 47 uF cap to eliminate hum. The neon glow lamp is brand new (GE #NE-51). The AM and FM IF transformers have each been disassembled to remove dendrites that often form on their mica capacitor wafers over the years due to silver oxide migration. The dial cord has also been restrung. All in all, it is a fine looking and pleasant sounding radio. If you are accustomed to the radios of today, you will surely be impressed by what a real radio can do! Zenith radios were designed well, built to last for many years, and to provide superior operational characteristics. They are also easy to repair, even when IF transformers fail. Due to the inherent nature of tubes, it is recommended for occasional use. The Zenith quality went in before the name went on! Make this one yours today!
