Up for saleis a vintagewooden sewing birdcaddy. This caddy has 2 pieces; the bird, scissor holder on top and a 3 drawer lower base. This item is hand made and was found in mid coast Maine about 10 years ago. I am not sure of the age but it\'s clearly been around for decades.
The sewing birdwings aregreen felt pin/needle cushions. They have some wear and a couple of holes, but in my opinion, it shows it\'s age and adds to the charm of this piece. It appears that the sewing bird is older than the base and that the base may have been made for the bird. Both sections have a dark finish overall and have some surface and edge wear.
Thestainfinish on the sewing bird isalligatored with age. There are8 pegs for thread spools and 1 peg for a thimble. It has a small drawer in the back with a wooden knob.I suspect this drawer has been replaced since the finish is different from the rest of the bird.The sewing bird caddymeasures 9.25 inches long, not including the knob. It is 8.5 inches tall.
The base has 3 drawers.The front drawer has a curved face with a carved pull. It has 4 sections that are filled with notions including buttons, spools, pin cushion, bobbins, hair items, pocket knives, purses, etc. There are 2 other drawers on the base, one on each side. These drawers have a carved pull in the face of the drawer and each drawer comes with the contents shown. The base is 14.5 inches long by 9.75 inches wide by 3 inches high. The back board is 7 inches high. The base has 6 wooden pegs for tread spools.
