What a neat find! The Gutenberg printing press -- THE Gutenberg press on which the first Bible with movable type was printed -- was on loan from the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz, Germany, to the Chicago World\'s Fair (The \"Century of Progress\" Exhibition) of 1933-34, as part of the exhibition of The Cuneo Press, Inc. Using type in the Donat font in which the first Gutenberg Bible was printed, the printers working at the exhibition set pages of type and printed and sold keepsake items to visitors to the exhibit. This sheet is one of those pages, containing the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount, as recorded in the fifth chapter of the Gospel of John. Wherever this hangs, it will provide an immediate and intimate connection between the viewer and the Church through the centuries.
The page is about 16 x 11\" as framed. The initial capital of the first saying, the \"B\" of \"Blessed are...\" is hand illuminated with colored as well as gold paint; there is some additional border decoration using the same paints.
There is no formal authentication of this piece; the information above comes from the descriptive statement glued to the backing paper of the piece, and some further Internet reading, which has verified the presence of the Gutenberg press at the Cuneo Exhibit at the Chicago Exhibition. Both the printed page and the framing materials appear consistent with a given age of eighty plusyears.
