Thisis a vintage Webcor model 210 1/4” tape recorder made byWebster-Chicago. This unit is a beautiful early 1950s model with asix tube set up (6SL7, 6SC7, 6SN7, 6K6, 6X5, 6E5) that is completewith the original power cord, microphone, and owner\'smanual/schematic. I bought this unit about 15 years ago thinking thatI would have it restored for doing field recordings, but it justnever happened. I am in the midst of decluttering our studio fromlesser-used music things and this qualifies, thus I am selling it.
Thisis a beautiful piece of open reel history in complete condition, withits gold and maroon finish and interesting layout (controls in allfour corners and a magic eye?!). It is a 60+ year old piece ofequipment, so it will need restoration, but it is an excellentcandidate. First, everything powers on like it should and I can hearthe amplifier engage (there is a crackling noise of most likely amicrophonic tube). Second, while it is sluggish at first, the reelplays in forward and reverse. I couldn\'t get a signal out of it. Ithas a few nicks and dents, but those come with 60+ years. My guess isthat it needs lubrication, a new tube or two, filter capacitors, anda few small parts to be restored. It is clean and original (the tubesare all green label Sylvania and white lettering RCA) so it shouldmake a great “no surprises” restoration for such a beautifulunit.
Overall,it is a beautiful open reel deck from the age of beautiful taperecorders. Unlike most, this one is complete, including the lid, handle, microphone, power cable, knobs, and original lithographmanual. I have enjoyed having this unit on display for in oursmoke-free studio now I am hoping to find it a new home so I ampricing it at a good price.
