WOWZAc.1902 Special Order/Component Antique Bicycle/Fauber/Great Western/Crown:
$5500.00

Greetings...

Here is a one-of-a-kind special catalog-ordered/component bike from circa 1902+. It is badgeless as all catalog-ordered frames were. (no badge holes) It is 100% untouched original, down to the period all-white pure rubber tires. This bike was ridden sparingly (since it has been in my collection) until about 10 years ago, and then I decided to not put any stress on these 100+ artifact tires. These days it is for display only, and has won many awards over the years. Back when I was riding it, this bike covered a lot of ground quickly!

I am parting with this Crown to help fund a book project on the very factory that produced this bike, Crown Cycle Co./Great Western Mfg. Co., LaPorte, Indiana. Compiling significant bikes, parts and ephemera for 18 years has been costly and stressful at times(trying to find the $ for much needed info/parts/etc). So this honey is looking for a new home.

Many aspects set this wheel apart from the crowd.

==THE BIKE FRAME+== Original thick black enamel is crackled, checked, blistered, and missing in areas(no rust anywhere). This compilation was assembled around 1902/1903-ish, from this gorgeous LARGE 26\" scorcher/road design ...great geometry!...There were not many jobbers/dealers that had a \'26\' on their showroom floor. Most guys had to stock bikes that they could move, because selling bikes was a tough road to coin, with little profit. *Order this one for the tall-man. Around this time many trade catalogs offered frame-fork-crank ready-made assemblies. This was a sweetheart package, with the \"new\" Morrow, and...

= FAUBER SPROCKET/CRANK= \"Crown\" sprocket with double-diamond \"bayonet\" cranks. Fauber was without a doubt the best crank in the world at the time, and a marvel of design being one-piece,; small housing only allowable because of the cutouts and the screw-in cups. This is undamaged and smooth. A couple of the mounting screws have been replaced on sprocket. Nickel as-seen. Original block chain is in nice shape. A broken outer sleeve-link at master, doesn\'t affect operation but had to mention.

==TIRES/WHEELS= first of all, there are very few original white-rubber bicycle tires from this period that EXIST AT ALL. Most melted, became rock-hard or both. It is amazing that these still hold air, long enough for a day-display or stay partial aired for months in storage. There is only one way these are still displayable today, and that is because this bike has always been off the ground/hung-up. They are a mis-match regarding the style/brand. You can\'t be picky about your 115-year old tires. The front is Patent dated November 17,1903....it may be the bike\'s first replacement(and last) or the bike is closer to \'03...The front tire is a super-cool Vitalic/V-tread, with the classic blue-oval trademark insets. Vitalics were made by Continental Rubber Works in Erie, Pa. The rear is a rare US/United States Tire Company product, \"Nobby\"(the first BMXhaha) made in New York. Both are \'showing-their-age\' and are quite surface-cracked, a few very mild bulges and surface splits. They both have indulged in some Slime over the years in my possession and I keep the tires rotated from time to time and all is still intact. The rear tire has a new valve stem(about 10 years ago) as a result of a shearing off as the tire slipped on the rim(when I was peeling-out). That day was the decision to make this a non-rider, and preserve these rare tires for as long as the inherent chemistry wills it. Both rims are true and were originally black to match the frame. Not much remained when I got it and I easily flaked it off to get the present look. The back rim has a 4\" edge of wood that is gone and isn\'t much noticed unless you happened to be looking for it. It\'s on the sprocket-side.

==TROXEL SEAT== a gorgeous example of this touring/road saddle, and and interesting choice by the original owner. All seams are tight, with surface cracking as-seen. Plenty of nickel to be seen on frame and post with unique clamp. Seat measures 7.5\" wide X 9\" from nose to back.

==HANDLEBARS== dirty scratched-patina, never cleaned. Grips are rare early natural rubber, black-dyed. \"Welded\" to bars via years of sunlight, never been removed and will probably never come off unless you sacrifice them. One chunk missing on right one and a dimple on left one from? Close to the right grip on the turnback curve it is a bit thinner, a mild smoosh. Mentionable, noticeable under scrutiny.

==ACCESSORIES== this bike is being sold with all of the rare period accessories seen/shown here.

=KEYSER CLOCK/1892= The most scarce is an obsolete example of the Keyser Bicycle Clock, circa 1892! The holder/collar is patented, and the clock(made by Parker) is also marked on back \"Keyser Bicycle Clock\". This is possibly the only known example! It is RUNNING and features a pendulum in window on dial. After winding a bit, you need to get balance moving by twisting case. It runs well does not keep time; it is fast and will need adjusting. It never mattered to me about accuracy; it works. I could easily get $1K for this clock, but it will NOT be separated from this bike. Want the clock? Buy the bike. It does pre-date the bike by 10 years I know. More appropriate for an early pnuematic? Sure.

=MORROW 1902 COASTER BRAKE= this is not really an accessory, but more like a component :) ...a beautiful example with some plating thinning/loss. Probably never lubed or serviced. Is sluggish after being stored, but snaps right into service once rolling. Check out those incredibly RARE eccentric chain-adjusters! WOW!

=MIRROSCOPE(MIRROR)=, Circa 1890\'s. This is the first genuine rear-view mirror for a bicycle. Incredible convex glass original and built like a tank(clamp). Silvering is flaking in a few spots, and veining a bit. Patina!

=LANTERN= a superb undamaged example of a working/complete 20th Century kerosene lamp. I have had this fired-up several times over the years using the clean-burning lamp oil sold these days. Lens is a bit heat-blasted/foggy but not cracked. Nickel/brass case is nice and presents nickel in large quantities. I love these lamps, as they can be easily removed to use as a carry lantern. The housings of these get red-hot after only a few minutes and I bet many-a-rider was branded by accidentally touching the surface. Thus, a handle. The mounting bracket is also multi-use, as other than the headtube-mount, it also is fork-mountable, for those really dark and spooky country roads.

=SEISS ROOT-OUT HORN= this is the larger size(not the kiddie-one that shows up). Hand crank this and it\'s called a \"root-out\" for a reason. It can be heard from afar, and sounds like a duck with a bazooka. Circa 1905. Works as-new with original paint. Mounted on seat post.

=VEEDER CYCLOMETER= early version and with trip meter. Complete with original pin on spokes. Has been mounted on this bike since day-1.

=STAR PEDALS= rat-trap beauties, (marked Star on end caps) they move smooth, are complete and not damaged. Some plating loss and light surface corrosion in areas, but plenty of nickel still left. Again, original to bike. Lots of Hoosier on this bike, and the pedals have the scarce Buescher pedal toe retainers/stops/clips. Amazing NOS-condition via Elkhart, Indiana. I added these during my long ownership.

=SPROCKET LOCKS= These locks have been added to the display. One is the SPRO-CKET brand, by Slaymaker, original key, and to make it a bit more difficult to walk-away with this bike with my back turned, I added a desirable Eagle triangle, original key.

=POLICE WHISTLE= I found this holder years ago and mounted it for my police whistle. Who else has one of these? It works and sounds great. Dogs come running sometimes. Looks bitchin\'.
