WW2 US Army Signal Corps BC-611-C (SCR-536) Transmitters Handie Talkies ~ SET of TWO ~ NICE
Up for your consideration is this nice pair of WW2 US Army Signal Corps BC-611-C (SCR-536) \"Handie Talkies\". These BC-611 might well be the most famous World War II radio ever made. This was a short range radio used during theSecond World War by the US, and Allied, Armed Forces in Italy, N W Europe, and the Pacific. Under the Army Nomenclature System, theBC-611transceiver was the core component of the SCR-536 Signal corps radioset. The Signal Corps technical manual number was TM 11-235. The US Signal Corps developed the SCR-536 early in the Second World War, It was produced beginning in 1942 by the Galvin Manufacturing Co. By 1945 130,000 had been produced. The SCR-536 was an extremely popular set and was colloquially known as a \"Handie-Talkie\". It consisted of a five-valve, low-power, battery operated, AM (HF) transceiver that was designed for portability and ease of operation. It featured a single channel crystal control between 3.5 and 6Mc/s, and it had an R/T communication range of 1 mile over land and 3 miles over salt water. The set was switched into a receiving mode by extending the telescopic aerial, and to transmit the press-to-talk switch was depressed. The aerial was protected by a connected cover. The set was well-engineered and designed and could be held in one hand, hence \"Handie-Talkie\" . It was used virtually everywhere in the world, weighed only 2kg, and was proofed against fungi and moisture.The SCR-536 was also modified for use in military gliders under the designation SCR-585. The SCR-536 is often considered the first of modern hand held, self-contained, \"handie talkie\" two-way radios.
This pair of BC-611-C Handie Talkies are in remarkable condition given their age. As to whether this pair of BC-611-C Handie Talkies was ever used in the 2nd World War , I have no way of knowing. I did acquire these from the estate sale of a former World War II veteran that had a large amount of photographs and other items from his service during the war. They are all original as far as I can determine. The paint is quite nice and I see no indications that they were re-painted or touched up. Both antenna extend fully. Neither unit has the original battery however, the battery contacts do look clean and are free of rust and both have a removable battery clip. The frequency of both units is the same, 3885, and is marked in a label on the sides. Both the microphone and receiving metal covers unscrew easily. I do notice that that on one unit the microphone has the original cone while it is missing on the other. Neither receiver has the cone and I am not sure if it ever did. As you can see, both talkies have their original antenna covers and the original coated wire holder is in place. Finally, the khaki webbing carrying strap on both units is intact and in great condition. I have included a ton of photographs, please examine them closely as they show the actual condition of these rare walkie talkies.
Obviously, because these are over 66 years old and untested, there is no guarantee that they will work!
