(REME Officers & Non-Commissioned Officers in North Africa 1943

At the beginning of WWII the maintenance& repair of British military equipment, & mechanical & electricalequipment was maintained individual by the different British corps & relateddepartments, but once thrust into war, the British Govt. recognized the needfor a more streamlined operation that could be centralized & work moreefficiently in time of war, as England began shifting to full military mobilization.

In 1941 the British War Dept. &Operations Cabinet recognized this vital operational need & Sir WilliamBeveridge became the designated committee chairperson to develop a centralized departmentresponsible for all military vehicles and transport of all types, and all mechanical equipment, & electrical repairs& maintenance. As a result of thiscommittee’s recommendations a unit of specialized & support tradesmen ofall types would be developed to fill this new requirement.

On October 1, 1942 the Royal Corp ofElectrical and Mechanical Engineers was formed. This new unitreceived immediate “Royal” status due to it’s commitment to “Deliver the goods”

(A regiment of newly trained REME Officers & enlisted men undergoes inspection) The REME Corp’s motto \"Arte et Marte\" (By Skill and By Fighting)

The corps firstmajor operation was to support the British 8th Army during the 2ndBattle of El Alamein. (23 October – 4 November 1942)

(Tank recovery & jeep repair during the 2nd Battle of El Alemain)

The newcorps support of the 8th Army during the battle was a resoundingsuccess & the corp expanded to support British military operations on allfronts throughout the remainder of the war. REME continued to expand throughout the remainder of WW2 andsoon became the biggest Corps in the British Army, reaching its maximumpersonnel strength of 160,000 all ranks by May 1945. Another result of thesuccessful transition of the new Corps was the appearance of identicalformations within all Empire and Commonwealth Armed forces, modelled exactly onthe original REME concept.

Today REME continues to support allBritish military operations worldwide & its men continue to carry on thetradition of “Delivering the goods”
